Ode to SisterDear

Posted at 11:34 am under Autism, Bipolar, Sisters

Sisterdear3 is truly a most amazing woman. She is a wonderful sister, daughter, friend, wife and mother. Sisterdear3 has 4 children; a 19 year old daughter who has Bipolar Disorder, a 16 year old son with raging hormones and 8 year old twin boys. Did I mention that the twins are Austic, one more so than the other? Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, or PDD-NOS, for short. Sisterdear3’s husband is a cop. Her BFF and her pediatrician each have sons who are Autistic. In fact, Sisterdear3 and her pediatrician have long been on a first name basis, they meet for coffee as often as Sisterdear3’s schedule will allow.

This has been a very stressful week for Sisterdear3. We speak almost daily and this past week our conversations have been mostly about the rantings and disruptive actions of her daughter. After repeating her senior year of high school because she refused to go to school a month at a time, she is now in her first semester of college. I truly wish I could say that it has been going well. She took 5 courses. She immediately dropped one because she insisted that she’d already taken the same course in high school; “too bad if the college doesn’t accept the transcripts/grade”, or words to that effect. She flunked her Mid-terms on 2 of the other classes and it is my understanding that she is not doing well in the remaining classes. Now, the weekend before Thanksgiving Break, she has decided to skip this week’s classes and has come home to wreak havoc on her parents and siblings. Yes, we actually believe that is her plan.

Honestly, I don’t know how Sisterdear3 manages to get through a single day. Her daughter is adamantly opposed to taking her meds. Sisterdear2 (who is about to graduate with a BA in nursing, an RN, yeah!) tells us that is it very common for a Bipolar patient to refuse meds and/or deny that they need them. My brother-in-law has lost all patience with his daughter, and I can’t say that I blame him. She’s exhausting everyone around her.

We love her deeply, of course. When she’s not cycling she is a very intelligent, delightful girl to spend time with. However, when she is cycling, especially a manic cycle, it’s all about her. Me, me, me. Speed-talking, inflated self-esteem, poor-judgement, paranoia… She exhibits every symptom. There’s is no room for anyone else’s needs. To borrow a phrase from The Ya-Ya Sisterhood, she sucks all the air out of the room. She was briefly seeing a counselor at the college, very briefly. I wish we could find a way to convince her to go back to her doctor and get back on meds. We really miss that girl.

One Witty Remark to “Ode to SisterDear”

  1. Carolynon 05 Jan 2008 at 12:30 pm 1

I did the same thing as your niece with college… I cannot tell you how many courses I failed because I didn’t go or “didn’t get around to doing” a major assignment… or how many I dropped because in a manic state of self-inflation thought I could take 15 credits per semester even though I was a single mom and working full time and it got to be too much for me… It ended up taking me ten years to get my two year degree!!! Feel free to send your niece my email address or blog link…

WW: First Fridays

Filed under Thought for the Day

What is First Friday?

Downtown Valdosta has become a vibrant and lively spot every day of the month but, on the first Friday evening of each month, downtown comes alive with music, food, shopping, art and more. Since the First Friday event in Jun 2005, First Fridays have grown to attract an average of more than 1,250 people. Many activities start about 6 p.m., with most of the music starting about 7 p.m. First Fridays reflect the diversity of Downtown Valdosta as well as the diversity of the entire city.

photohunter7iq.pngThis week’s Photo Hunter Theme is Wooden.

I decided to use my Tiki Torch for this weeks’ Wooden Theme because it’s may be the only time I’ll ever get to use it!

I’m usually in bed by 8:00, long before dark in the summer!

img_0166_web.JPG
I usually light it only on the rare evening that isn’t so humid that it drives us back inside to the air conditioning!

img_0167_web.JPG
The Tiki Torch is never left unattended, and is always extinguished before retiring for the evening.

PhotoHunt: Moody AFB Air Show 2007

Filed under Thought for the Day

This week’s theme from tnchick is ANY photo. I took this at an air show at Moody AFB on October 21, 2007. It was a glorious day to be a spectator, but the winds were really kicked up. They nearly had to call off the air show.

We ended up in the VIP section. You know, the section that’s all roped off? The one that’s smack dab in the middle right on the air strip. The one with all the free food and drinks? We just walked in with some other folks. I was trailing behind my friend, taking photos. When I walked up to join him the guards stopped me and told me I wasn’t allowed in. They had really big guns. I wasn’t going to argue. I called in to my friend, who was already seated in the bleachers, to come back out. One of the guards said “Oh, I’m sorry, ma’am, we didn’t realize you were with him”. Then he at-eased and let me in. I dunno.

We didn’t realize our dumb luck until I went up to get a bottle of water and got out my money and they said “Oh, no, no, no. It’s complimentary for the VIP’s”. Cool. We had the best seats on base, other than perhaps the cockpit. Did I mention the Free Food?

Would you like to know the name of this particular maneuver? So would I, so if you happen to know it please let me know because I forgot, probably right after they announced it. It was way cool, though!

Weekend Snapshot: Phalaenopsis

button1.gifI’ve really been missing my Orchids. I had about 3-1/2 dozen Orchids of all varieties in my lovely shaded yard in Florida. They only got dappled morning sun there. When I bought my home in Georgia I had to adopt out all my Orchids to a friend in Florida because my yard has too much sun from October-April. 031408-158.jpg

I went shopping yesterday! I found this Beauty! Guess what’s on my desk at The Swamp now? Welcome home, you gorgeous thing!
img_0599_web.JPG
The Garden Center also the most spectacular Lily, which has one of my all time favorite scents. It was a monumental effort, but I resisted.

Phalaenopsis (Blume 1825) is a genus of approximately 60 species of orchids (family Orchidaceae). The abbreviation in the horticultural trade is Phal.

The generic name means “Phalaen[a]-like” and is probably a reference to the genus Phalaena, the name given by Carolus Linnaeus to a group of large moths; the flowers of some species supposedly resemble moths in flight. For this reason, the species are sometimes called Moth orchids.

I finally did it. I moved my blog to it’s own domain!

I’ve authored my own commercial website for about 10 years now, so I wasn’t expecting as many stumbling blocks as I encountered. It took quite some time to find a Theme I was happy with (hopefully, I won’t hate this in a day or two). I also struggled with blogging software, installation issues and finding what I hope is the right Host.

The two things that have amazed me the most though is the difference between WordPress.com blogs and WordPress.org blogging, and how much my brain freezes when I switch back and forth between the Blogger blogs and the WordPress blogs.

Thank Goodness my cats are here with me, helping to keep me straight!

So. Welcome to WillThink4Wine.com!

Sit. Stay. Good Blogger.

Cheers.

Photo Hunt: Different

Filed under Photo Hunt, The Swamp

photohunter7iq.pngThis week’s Photo Hunt Theme is Different.

This downed tree is different from the one the Turtles usually use for their morning sunning.

We had an extreme drought here in South Georgia last year, with wildfires. This year we’re getting so much rain we’re flooding. The Swamp has had several trees fall already. The Turtles seemed pleased about this one for their daily sunning.

They usually line up according to size, largest in the front, which is different from this messy and unorganized formation.

My Weekend Snapshot is here, due to the following:

So, I upgraded to WP 2.5 yesterday. I thought it went off without a hitch!

Until.. I begin my first post since upgrading. I find that I can’t insert any photos. I can upload into the Gallery, but it won’t show the thumbnails and I can’t do anything with them.

I can see them in the Media Library with the Thumbnails.

I’m getting very frustrated! I deactivated ALL my plugins, but it made no difference.

OK Internet – what am I missing?? HELP!!!

PhotoHunt: Unique/Funny Signs

Filed under Thought for the Day

When Allen first bought the house at The Swamp, we were commuting every other weekend or so from Florida until we could sell our business and move to Georgia permanently. On top of having the natural, unspoiled beauty of The Swamp and all its’ wildlife, we also have best neighbors! Mike, one of our new neighbors, had this little presentation waiting for us in the kitchen when we arrived for a long weekend in April 2006.

Coffee all ready to go, with a Welcome Back sign from Mike

When we first met Mike, we had no idea how much his friendship would enrich us. Mike is career Air Force, about 26 years now. Mike is the most patriotic person I have ever known. Mike is also a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was critically injured in Baghdad, Iraq about 4 years ago. His injuries were quite extensive, including Traumatic Brain Injury. He also suffers from Post- Traumatic Shock Disorder.

What defines Mike, however, is his love of God, Country, Family, Friends and Animals. He would literally give you the shirt off his back. Mike loves helping people, sometimes people he doesn’t even know well. I won’t share these things here, because Mike prefers to be an anonymous benefactor. He believes in giving people a hand up, and does so quite often. He’s an amazing human being. I am very grateful to call him my friend!
When I saw this Welcome Back from Mike, I cried. Then I took this photograph. Then I took the note and tucked it away with my treasures. It serves to remind me that a simple act of kindness can make a tremendous impact in someone else’s life.
Thank you, Mike. I love you, my friend.

Look what my Dad grew for me this year!
See that nasty looking bug?

They’re planted along the back corner fence. They’re about 6-7 feet tall now.

These are some seriously cool flowers!

This is the first bloom! Isn’t she a beauty?

The Last Lecture

Filed under Thought for the Day

Wow

Caution: There’s an elephant in the room. This may cause you to live your life differently.

I’m posting this because it is the most awe-inspiring thing I have personally seen in quite some time. It’s a must-see. If you have not yet watched this video, read the transcript or heard of Randy Pausch – here’s the unabridged version of the video. If you’d rather not watch the entire 76 minute video, there are links at You Tube to abridged 5-10 minute versions as well. Yahoo has the video of Randy’s Reprisal of the Last Lecture on Oprah.

Prepare to laugh. Prepare to cry, as Randy teaches us how to live, not how to die. Tissues highly recommended.

You can order the DVD (and more) by visiting Carnegie MellonRandy’s own web site is here.

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, who is dying from pancreatic cancer, gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving talk, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.

Stormy Weather

Filed under Thought for the Day

I don’t know how many of you actually remember Black & White TV and great old movies like this, but I saw this on A Gentleman’s Domain and it is four minutes and 41 seconds of pure brilliance!

Cab Calloway’s skat intros the The Nicholas Brothers‘ amazing tap performance in a phenomenal scene from the movie Stormy Weather. Fred Astaire once called this performance “the greatest dance number ever filmed.”

It’s not widely known, but when I was much, much younger I took 8 years of dance. I could totally still do this, but I’d require a stage with twin staircases, an orchestra, a great partner, and various other props.

Hi-De-Ho!

Social Stagnation

Filed under Thought for the Day

Yesterday was Martin Luther King, Jr Day. It has been nearly 40 years since he was assassinated.

If he were allowed to come back and speak to us today, what would he say? How has Society done as far as turning his Dream into a reality? How wisely has Society used these 40 years?

I would surely like to hear that speech.

Honestly, I don’t think he’d be pleased. In his Letter from Birmingham Jail, he referred to Time as being neutral. He said that Time could be used destructively or constructively, and that without effort and hard work, Time becomes an ally of “Social Stagnation”.

Oops.

Society may have left segregation in the past, but prejudice, discrimination, bias and bigotry still rear their ugly heads every day in every corner of the world. The major difference is that it’s no longer burning crosses and the Ku Klux Klan; now it’s Smart Bombs, IED’s and the Taliban. And guess what? It just doesn’t matter to them what the color of our skin is, or what our religion may be. They want to kill all Americans and our allies.

History is replete with examples of predjudice, bias, and bigotry; a people assuming that their race or religion was superior to another. It is Timeless. Yet we still haven’t learned the lesson.

Dr. King also said that Time is always ripe to do right. I hope we still have Time.

Weekend Snapshot: Spring

My Dad planted a few of these Spiraea Bushes last year. This is the only one that survived last years’ drought.

While it’s starting to look like it may actually make it, it’s a long way from looking like a bush!

Every year we have baby squirrels that the Mama Squirrel raises in a Hidey Hole in one of our Pecan Trees. This year we have 4 baby squirrels. You can see many more photos of them here, as well as read some of their story. I’ll be doing some follow-up on them as their lives unfold.
