WS: Tall Georgia Pines at The Swamp

Filed under Thought for the Day

The Weather ‘experts’ were forecasting some particulary nasty weather for us Sunday. We were fortunate; they were wrong. This photograph was taken beofre the wind kicked up and the nasty clouds rolled in, but we never did get any rain.

Photo Hunt: Different

Filed under Photo Hunt, The Swamp

photohunter7iq.pngThis week’s Photo Hunt Theme is Different.

This downed tree is different from the one the Turtles usually use for their morning sunning.

We had an extreme drought here in South Georgia last year, with wildfires. This year we’re getting so much rain we’re flooding. The Swamp has had several trees fall already. The Turtles seemed pleased about this one for their daily sunning.

They usually line up according to size, largest in the front, which is different from this messy and unorganized formation.

The Last Lecture

Filed under Thought for the Day

Wow

Caution: There’s an elephant in the room. This may cause you to live your life differently.

I’m posting this because it is the most awe-inspiring thing I have personally seen in quite some time. It’s a must-see. If you have not yet watched this video, read the transcript or heard of Randy Pausch – here’s the unabridged version of the video. If you’d rather not watch the entire 76 minute video, there are links at You Tube to abridged 5-10 minute versions as well. Yahoo has the video of Randy’s Reprisal of the Last Lecture on Oprah.

Prepare to laugh. Prepare to cry, as Randy teaches us how to live, not how to die. Tissues highly recommended.

You can order the DVD (and more) by visiting Carnegie MellonRandy’s own web site is here.

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, who is dying from pancreatic cancer, gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving talk, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.

PhotoHunt: Unique/Funny Signs

Filed under Thought for the Day

When Allen first bought the house at The Swamp, we were commuting every other weekend or so from Florida until we could sell our business and move to Georgia permanently. On top of having the natural, unspoiled beauty of The Swamp and all its’ wildlife, we also have best neighbors! Mike, one of our new neighbors, had this little presentation waiting for us in the kitchen when we arrived for a long weekend in April 2006.

Coffee all ready to go, with a Welcome Back sign from Mike

When we first met Mike, we had no idea how much his friendship would enrich us. Mike is career Air Force, about 26 years now. Mike is the most patriotic person I have ever known. Mike is also a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was critically injured in Baghdad, Iraq about 4 years ago. His injuries were quite extensive, including Traumatic Brain Injury. He also suffers from Post- Traumatic Shock Disorder.

What defines Mike, however, is his love of God, Country, Family, Friends and Animals. He would literally give you the shirt off his back. Mike loves helping people, sometimes people he doesn’t even know well. I won’t share these things here, because Mike prefers to be an anonymous benefactor. He believes in giving people a hand up, and does so quite often. He’s an amazing human being. I am very grateful to call him my friend!
When I saw this Welcome Back from Mike, I cried. Then I took this photograph. Then I took the note and tucked it away with my treasures. It serves to remind me that a simple act of kindness can make a tremendous impact in someone else’s life.
Thank you, Mike. I love you, my friend.

Stormy Weather

Filed under Thought for the Day

I don’t know how many of you actually remember Black & White TV and great old movies like this, but I saw this on A Gentleman’s Domain and it is four minutes and 41 seconds of pure brilliance!

Cab Calloway’s skat intros the The Nicholas Brothers‘ amazing tap performance in a phenomenal scene from the movie Stormy Weather. Fred Astaire once called this performance “the greatest dance number ever filmed.”

It’s not widely known, but when I was much, much younger I took 8 years of dance. I could totally still do this, but I’d require a stage with twin staircases, an orchestra, a great partner, and various other props.

Hi-De-Ho!

Social Stagnation

Filed under Thought for the Day

Yesterday was Martin Luther King, Jr Day. It has been nearly 40 years since he was assassinated.

If he were allowed to come back and speak to us today, what would he say? How has Society done as far as turning his Dream into a reality? How wisely has Society used these 40 years?

I would surely like to hear that speech.

Honestly, I don’t think he’d be pleased. In his Letter from Birmingham Jail, he referred to Time as being neutral. He said that Time could be used destructively or constructively, and that without effort and hard work, Time becomes an ally of “Social Stagnation”.

Oops.

Society may have left segregation in the past, but prejudice, discrimination, bias and bigotry still rear their ugly heads every day in every corner of the world. The major difference is that it’s no longer burning crosses and the Ku Klux Klan; now it’s Smart Bombs, IED’s and the Taliban. And guess what? It just doesn’t matter to them what the color of our skin is, or what our religion may be. They want to kill all Americans and our allies.

History is replete with examples of predjudice, bias, and bigotry; a people assuming that their race or religion was superior to another. It is Timeless. Yet we still haven’t learned the lesson.

Dr. King also said that Time is always ripe to do right. I hope we still have Time.

Sister’s Sonata

One of my most favorite moments of the Sister Weekend.
OK, SisterDear3 (aka My Bellavia) was playing Heart and Soul, but still….

Then SisterDear4 stepped in to play the upper part….

What’s this? SisterDear 2 picks up the harmonica!
BIL joined in (perhaps better known to you as Enrico Suave, Cabana Boy).
Bonus!! Enrico Suave can actually play the piano! Think ‘Billy Joel’. Think ‘Piano Man’. Think ‘Bottle of Red, Bottle of White’.
Oh, Enrico!!! I’ll have red, please!

Sister Weekends

Filed under Thought for the Day

Do any of you have Sisters? If you do, do you have a very close relationship?

I can’t imagine my life without my 3 SisterDears. They know all the worst things about me and they love me anyway! I live about 1500 miles away from them, but through the miracle of technology, we remain very close! Cell phones, email and blogs, gotta love it! Truth be told, with life happening everyday, school, sports, work…. something always happens so they can’t get together all that often. That is until I make my ‘annual trek’ up for our Sister Weekend! We all truly treasure our Sister Weekends.

I’ve been trying to decide when to go up this year. I usually go in July, but every 3-5 years I go up for Christmas. I wouldn’t want to completely forget how much I dislike snow and the bitter cold now would I? I finally decided! I have decided that this year I will go up for the Fall Foliage!! The last time I saw New England Fall Foliage was October 1993, and it was past its peak. So, I have decided to go up at the end of September this year. Plans are being made. Excited? Who me? Only completely!

We’re going to “do” Boston this year! Plans, we must make plans!! Faneuil Hall, The Paul Revere House, The Freedon Trail and Boston Common, the Old North Church, Bunker Hill Monument, the Museums… a Red Sox game!!! We’ll also do some sitting around the fire in our Norman hats sipping wine, listening to the piano and singing along in our relaxing clothes. Bliss!

Stock up the wine! Which restaurants shall we eat at? Decisions, decisions!

Oh, what fun we shall have!

Today is a very special day!

It is SisterDear4’s Birthday and her daughter/my niece’s Leann’s Birthday!

Happy Birthday, SD4! ~ Happy Birthday, Leann!

It’s also my beautiful gray boys’ Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Gandalf & Grayson!

Gandalf is 4 and Grayson is 5! Stop by and wish them a Happy Birthday!

Weary, we are

The Bipolar Express just ran through town again. You know how it feels when you’re standing on the train platform and an express train whooshes past the platform?

j0403633.jpgMy bipolar niece is like that. She sucks the air right out of the room. She sent an email during the night denouncing the Aunts as relatives, accusing us once more of being biased and uninformed self-proclaimed experts who know nothing about anything. She is angry and offended. Again.

She still refuses to consider going back on her meds, ever defiant.

Her mother, me and the other SisterDears are weary of the fight. So we catch our breath and gather strength from one another while we wait, for the next time.

Thursday Thirteen #3 – 13 Attitudes of Gratitude

t13-32-mine.jpg

Thursday Thirteen – 3rd Edition

Thirteen Things for which I am Grateful

  1. SisterDear2  – She is so amazing! SD2 did day care for 18 years or so while she raised her 2 boys. She was so great at it that her waiting list was a couple of years out. SD2 just graduated from Nursing School. She is now an RN! She just turned 51 before she graduated from college!  You go girl!

  2. SisterDear3 – She is so inspiring! SD3 is wife to a cop and mother to 4 children. She has a daughter in college who happens to have Bipolar Disorder, a teenage son and twin 8 year old sons, one of whom is Autistic (PDD/NOS). She faces each day with faith, love, humor and grace. She finally got her son placed in what we hope will be a good fit for him. She is anxiously looking forward to re-joining the work force soon! She so needs to reacquaint herself with grown-up conversations again!

  3. SisterDear4 – She is so incredible! SD4 has literally reinvented herself in the last 5 years since her divorce. She has a teenage son and a preteen daughter. She remodeled her entire home in the past couple of years. She can do it all! Bringing home the bacon, gardening, repairs, painting… She doesn’t always want to do it all, but she can and does.

  4. My Cats – I can’t imagine my life anymore without my cats. I’ve always had dogs (Pekingese). I had just lost one little lovey and was in the final month of my other sweet puppy’s life when my cats found me. They totally rescued me.

  5. My Business – Had someone told me 25 years ago that I would be self-employed I’d have told them they were nuts! I opened my first business (with a partner) in 1987. Since that day there hasn’t been a day that I did not look forward to going in to the Office. I look forward to Mondays – Go figure!

  6. My Parents– I never expected to have my parents living with me. However, when I sold my first business and was looking for a house to buy in Georgia I asked them if they would also like to move with me. I was their only child (of eight!) living in Florida and I felt horrible about leaving them there, childless! They accepted and moved in with me and the Boys just about 2 years ago. I’m amazed at some of the stories my Dad tells me that I might never ever have heard unless they moved in with me. My Dad has a phenomenal memory that goes back to grade school. My Dad is 79! MotherDear is Queen of the Kitchen! She is my all-time favorite cook! Dinner is ready and on the table every night when I get home from work (even if I don’t feel like sitting down to dinner when I get home). This is just the coolest thing! I could go on and on about my parents. It’s been awesome having them here!

  7. Health – I have not had any major health issues in the 14 years since my divorce. Coincidence? No, I don’t think so.

  8. My Home – I joke quite a bit about hating the Yellow House. It had been painted just before the sellers put it on the market. Let me just say that Yellow is not my favorite color! I bought it in spite of the Yellow. But I am loving this house! I actually gave the Realtor a wish list with “Deal-Breakers” and stuck to it. I got everything on my list! How cool is that?

  9. Family– There’s a couple of doosies in the basket, but mostly I have the most wonderful family anyone could ever wish for and we have such a great time together.

  10. Friends – I have been blessed with some of the most amazing friends. Most I call family because they feel like family.

  11. Wine – I am grateful to have discovered my affection for wine! Wine is an adventure for me while at the same time an old familiar friend.

  12. My Walk-in Closet – My previous house was an adorable Cottage. I loved it. I absolutely hated to leave it. Cried my eyes out. I miss it. But I had NO closet!

  13. God – I was brought up in the Catholic Church but somehow missed God completely. I found God and was saved when I was about 38 years old!

Conversation with an 8 Year Old

Filed under Thought for the Day

I phoned one of my SisterDears Sunday afternoon. Kevin, one of her twin 8 year old sons, answered the phone. The conversation went exactly like this:

Me: Hi, Kevin, how are you?

Kevin: Who’s this?

Me: It’s Auntie Barb.

Kevin: Oh! Hi, Auntie Barbara! How are you doing?

Me: I’m doing very well, Kevin. Thanks so much for asking!

Kevin: :giggles: Oh, you’re welcome, Auntie.

Me: Kevin, is your Mom home?

Kevin: Well, yes she is, but you know what? She’s taking a nap right now and I hate to disturb her.

Alrighty then.

Menopause, the Weekend

Filed under Thought for the Day

I flew up to Massachusetts for a Sister Weekend with my 3 SisterDears! To say that we had a blast would be a monumental understatement! Here we are the first night, in our “Relaxing Clothes”!

My visit was a Big Secret, or so SisterDear2 and I had hoped! SisterDears 3 & 4 were just sure I was the BIG surprise when SisterDear2 asked them to reserve the weekend and plan to sleep over her house Friday & Saturday nights.

My very dear Brother-in-law was our Cabana Boy for the weekend! His self-chosen name for the entire weekend was Enrico Suave!! He was more than a good sport! He made home-made ravioli for me! He also cooked for us all weekend and fetched us wine whenever our glass was empty!

Actually, the BIG Surprise was that SisterDear2 had told her hubby that for her Mother’s Day gift she wanted tickets for all four of us for Menopause the Musical which was playing at the Stuart Street Playhouse in Boston. If it’s in your area, I wholeheartedly recommend seeing it!

We started the day with an early lunch at Rock Bottom Brewery, located in the heart of Boston’s Historic District and just down the street from the Theatre District. We ordered Improper Hopper Pale Ale, which we all agreed was quite yummy. Two of us ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with Onion Rings and two of us ordered Steak Tips: the chicken was delicious and received 2 thumbs up, the steak tips were not enjoyed by either sister and unfortunately received 2 thumbs down. The Clam Chowder appetizers and Onion Rings were both absolutely marvelous!

Then we walked around Boston and I took tons of photographs!
I had forgotten how much I love Boston! We’re going back to “do” Boston in the fall!
My travelling day yesterday was simply exhausting. I actually missed my second flight because of air traffic in Boston, but all three of my flights were late. In trying to rush to my Gate to make my second flight, I arrived only to see my plane pulling away. Talk about adding insult to injury, I have a huge blister on the ball of my right foot to further add to my aggravation and frustration! The flights themselves were all quite enjoyable. I took many photos which I will share on some upcoming Sky Watch Fridays!

A now, in the spirit of Menopause, I leave you with a joke. I can relate only too well!

After starting a new diet I altered my drive to work to avoid passing my favorite bakery.

I accidentally drove by the bakery this morning, and as I approached, there in the window were a host of goodies. I felt this was no accident, so I prayed … ‘Lord, it’s up to you. If you want me to have any of those delicious goodies, create a parking place for me directly in front of the bakery.’ And sure enough, on the eighth time around the block, there it was!!!

God is so Good!

Manic Monday: Quake

Filed under Thought for the Day

This week when Mo gave us Quake for Manic Monday I’ll admit it…. I was stumped.

I went to Savannah, GA for a short get away weekend with some friends. This city is steeped in History and southern ambiance. Its’ first recorded history was in 1733, the year General James Oglethorpe and the 120 passengers of the good ship “Anne” landed on a bluff high along the Savannah River.

Johnny Mercer wrote the Lyrics to Moon River, having been inspired by the Savannah River and his Huckleberry childhood in Savannah.

Savannah is dripping in Southern Charm & Hospitality!

Savannah is breathtaking in it’s beauty!

Savannah also has some of the most majestic Live Oak Trees.

Live Oaks make my heart quake!

Thank goodness for my digital camera and ginormous memory cards! In one day I took more than 500 photos of beautiful Savannah, GA. I know I’ll be back to visit Savannah again one day soon. There’s so much to see & do, and I never even explored the nightlife and dining.

Want to play Manic Monday? That’s easy, just stop by Mo’s for more info.

Thanks for stopping by today. I Linky Love You everyday, so if you’re leaving a comment, grab some Linky Love, too!

Photo Hunt: Party

photohunter7iq.pngThis week’s Photo Hunt Theme is Party.

So the first thing I thought of was… Cake!

This Royal Straight Flush was the cake from the Rehearsal Dinner for Mike & Danielle, my very awesome nephew Mike and my lovely new niece, Danielle.

Danielle had this cake made just for Mike because Mike loves Texas Hold ‘em (and who wouldn’t?). Mike’s “All In”.img_0072_web.JPG

They got married last July. Danielle felt just a little bit bad for Mike because the rest of the Wedding was “all about Danielle”. Naturally, and why shouldn’t it be?

They just bought and moved into their very first home a few weeks ago.

PhotoHunt: Wooden

photohunter7iq.pngThis week’s Photo Hunter Theme is Wooden.

I decided to use my Tiki Torch for this weeks’ Wooden Theme because it’s may be the only time I’ll ever get to use it!

I’m usually in bed by 8:00, long before dark in the summer!

img_0166_web.JPG
I usually light it only on the rare evening that isn’t so humid that it drives us back inside to the air conditioning!

img_0167_web.JPG
The Tiki Torch is never left unattended, and is always extinguished before retiring for the evening.

photohunter7iq.pngThis week’s Photo Hunter Theme is Free.

After Thursday’s post about my love for The Swamp, this week’s Theme Free was an easy choice. I can think of nothing that epitomizes “Free” better than Nature itself.

Our Swamp is completely “unmessed around with”. It is as God and all His wonderful creatures have made it. Free and Natural. So here are a few more photos of my wonderful Swamp.

In this one you can see some of the handy work of our Beavers. Isn’t it nice of them to cut some Free firewood for us? You can also see one of their dams in the top right.

img_0193_web.JPG
In this one you can see Tucker, off on yet another Purrfect Adventure.
img_0195_web.JPG
An added Bonus, our view is Free. Can you imagine what it might cost to hire a Landscaper to do this?

PhotoHunt: Heavy

photohunter7iq.pngThis week’s Photo Hunter Theme is Heavy.

I didn’t realize just how heavy my bedroom set was until I moved to Georgia. Everyone who contributed to getting it disassembled, loaded into the moving truck, unloaded, moved into my new home and reassembled positively Groaned! And told me I had better never move again!

The quilt is also quite heavy. It was made with many fabrics from my vast collection of fabric stash (which was huge) by Kim J., a daughter of my friend and business partner. I had quilted for years, but somehow never got around to making myself a quilt. I had always wanted a quilt that fit like a bedspread. In exchange for all of my quilting supplies Kim made me this fabulous reversable Cathedral quilt. It weighs well over 30 pounds!!

Orchids are lovely, delicate, elegant and vibrant. When they are blooming… simply exquisite!

Got Cats? Here’s another secret: Not so much cat-proof. When pounced upon, the spikes will break. Ask me how I know this.

There’s No Consolation In Being Right

Filed under Thought for the Day

I am the “go-to gal”. I always have been, since childhood. For those of you new to my world, I am the oldest of eight, count ‘em, eight children. I am the consummate organizer. I bring order to chaos. I can and I do.

I am sure many of you have been in situations where a family member, friend or co-worker has come to you for advice. Then almost immediately upon receiving these pearls of wisdom from you they leave, thanking you countless times for your insight and compassion.

Moments later, days later or weeks later, they have totally ignored every single word you have said, especially any words of caution you imparted specifically regarding what they should avoid at all costs.

Here it comes. The phone call. The crying call. The “what do I do now” call. The “please don’t say I told you so” call.

:sigh:

Do you honestly think I went to all that trouble just so I could say “I told you so”? Do you sincerely believe in your heart of hearts that I really wanted you to do the opposite of what I suggested you do? Do you actually buy in to the idea that I get satisfaction from watching you suffer continuously and needlessly as you repeat the same mistake over & over again?

Sometimes, just sometimes, people make me wish I were wrong.

Truly, there are times when there is no consolation in being right, especially when someone you love gets hurt. Again.

PhotoHunt: Moody AFB Air Show 2007

Filed under Thought for the Day

This week’s theme from tnchick is ANY photo. I took this at an air show at Moody AFB on October 21, 2007. It was a glorious day to be a spectator, but the winds were really kicked up. They nearly had to call off the air show.

We ended up in the VIP section. You know, the section that’s all roped off? The one that’s smack dab in the middle right on the air strip. The one with all the free food and drinks? We just walked in with some other folks. I was trailing behind my friend, taking photos. When I walked up to join him the guards stopped me and told me I wasn’t allowed in. They had really big guns. I wasn’t going to argue. I called in to my friend, who was already seated in the bleachers, to come back out. One of the guards said “Oh, I’m sorry, ma’am, we didn’t realize you were with him”. Then he at-eased and let me in. I dunno.

We didn’t realize our dumb luck until I went up to get a bottle of water and got out my money and they said “Oh, no, no, no. It’s complimentary for the VIP’s”. Cool. We had the best seats on base, other than perhaps the cockpit. Did I mention the Free Food?

Would you like to know the name of this particular maneuver? So would I, so if you happen to know it please let me know because I forgot, probably right after they announced it. It was way cool, though!

Photo Hunt: Metal

photohunters2mo1.jpg

This week’s Photo Hunt is Metal.

We just picked up this 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe!

031408-035_web.jpg

It’s got lots of metal, doesn’t it? Actually, it has more metal than most cars built nowadays.

031408-029_web.jpg

Years ago, way back in 1971, I had a 1965 Ford Mustang. A Convertible. Baby Blue. 4 on the floor. Leaf Springs and a very heavy clutch. Oh, man, it was the best!

031408-030_web.jpg

I helped Mr. X refurbish it in his Grandmother’s heated garage over the winter up in Massachusetts. Brrr. We were still in high school. It was a lot of work, but very enjoyable and gratifying! We drove it to my Prom. We drove it on our Honeymoon. It was just the most awesome car!! It was stolen in the late 70’s.

031408-031_web.jpg

When this Beauty came up for sale, I thought I might enjoy refurbishing another one, and so one day, the flat bed arrived!

031408-033_web.jpg

And we took a closer look. Considering that it’s 42 years old, and considering that it needed very little coaxing to start up and run, it’s not in bad shape at all!

031408-034_web.jpg

But considering that I am not in high school anymore, we’ve decided to re-sell it to someone who not only appreciates the beauty of the Mustang, but also has the energy and stamina that it will require to return this baby back to its’ formery glory and beauty!

Every year we have baby squirrels that the Mama Squirrel raises in a Hidey Hole in one of our Pecan Trees. This year we have 4 baby squirrels. You can see many more photos of them here, as well as read some of their story. I’ll be doing some follow-up on them as their lives unfold.

Naturally, and why shouldn’t it be?
danielle_web.jpg

They just bought and moved into their very first home a few weeks ago.

Congratulations you guys! You are the coolest… except for you Bri.

If you missed yesterday’s post, I encourage you to have a look. There’s an 11 minute video that may change how you live your life.
