My Bucket List
I have been inspired once more by Sydney. And so I begin My Bucket List. These are no particular order, simply as they spring to mind. I will keep this list in my anchored pages so that I can update it. I haven’t seen this movie yet, and am very much looking forward to it 
Before I “Kick The Bucket” I want to:
- Marry the love of my life and live happily ever after. I imagine feeling completely content and utterly safe with him, listening to music, sampling wines, reading, watching sappy old movies all while snuggling up in front of a cozy fire.
- Dance to All I Ask of You at my wedding.
- Spend a month in Tuscany in a lovely Villa with a fireplace and a pool. I want it to be overlooking a vineyard on one side, and Cypress trees, Poppy fields and Olive trees on the other. I want to spend my days exploring ancient Rome and local marketplaces while sipping wine and sampling all the fabulous food only the local Italians can offer.
- Pay off my mortgage and finally and forever be completely debt-free. While I have never imagined myself being wealthy, and have no non-secured debt, this is my idea of true wealth.
- Learn to relax, as thoroughly and luxuriously as my cats do every day of their nine lives.
- Learn to play the piano.
- Own a second home in New England so as often as I wished I could spend as much time with my sisters as I would like.
- See the Pyramids.
- See the triumphant return of Jesus. I can’t explain it, but since I was a little girl, I have always felt that I would be alive when that happens. I felt this way long before I knew what being saved was. I am an avid reader of biblical prophesy. Unfortunately, my brain is too small to hold the enormity of it and my memory is such that I retain very little of it. Of course, I know I am in good company! I read the Left Behind series in great anticipation of reading another person’s concept of what that magnificent event will be like.
- Know that everybody I love is saved and will spend all eternity free of pain and tears.
- Spend a Christmas at a ski lodge in Vermont, not unlike the firepit scene with Bob Wallace & Betty Haynes from White Christmas. I am originally from New England and have never been to Vermont! I have always imagined it to be at it’s most splendid during Christmas.
- Attend a Placido Domingo concert while he is still in glorious voice.
- Attend a Andrea Bocelli concert, in Italy.
- Reach my ideal body weight and be in excellent health.
- Watch the sunset on an uncrowded beach in St. Maarten with my only love.
- See The Phantom of the Opera in London, enjoy a pint at the pub, visit Stonehenge and walk across the crosswalk on Abbey Road.
- Spend at least a week in Greece.
- Encourage my parents to check off as many items from their Bucket List while they both enjoy strong body, mind and spirit.

Now that I’ve inspired you to write yours, I guess I should go and write mine! LOL Yes, we must be kindred spirits because I want to add a variation of #1, 3, 4, 9 and 10 to my list.
Are you planning to see the movie? I love both Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. It looks like it’s going to be a blast.

Choice and Consequence
Sometimes, revelations come to me when I am trying to help someone else understand something. I’ve discovered that mostly, I ask questions and let people discover the answers for themselves, rather than give answers they wouldn’t accept anyway. I have observed that the words taste sweeter when they’ve come from their own mouths.
Jen is the daughter I never had. I have been in her life from the day she was born. I treasure every second I get to spend with her. My life is richer because of what I have hoped for her. I have always tried to teach her good life lessons, through word and deed. I encourage her to think things through so that she can make wise choices. Ask her how many times she’s heard me say Well, he/she didn’t choose wisely, did he/she? and she will laugh and roll her eyes.
When Jen was about 11 years old, she came to me very upset about something that happened to her brother. She told me that he had been unfairly kicked off his baseball team just before they went to the state finals. The officials had discovered he had used an address other than his own to be placed on a team he preferred rather than the team in his district. She was going on and on about how unfair the officials were being to her brother and the team, that the team needed their star catcher and that she would never, ever go to another game. So I asked her some simple questions. Did her father and brother understand the rules? Yes. And understanding those rules, did they choose to disregard them and purposefully enter a false address on the application so that Dan could play on the team he wanted to play on? Yes. So, who is responsible for the consequence of sending his team to the finals without their star catcher and letting down the entire team? Well, I guess Dan and Dad.
I have a 20 year old niece who is extremely intelligent and active in sports. She is also Bipolar.
About 2 weeks into her first semester at U-Mass, she called me to tell me that she was dropping out. She was in a hypomanic state. Generally, whenever she calls me in this state, I just listen. Considering that she is speed-talking, this course of action is also the easiest! When she took a breath and asked if I was still there I answered, Yes, I am playing the part of the listener to your speaker, the part of the conversation equation that you are all too unfamiliar with. She laughs, and asks me what I think. I asked her Have you thought through this decision to it’s logical conclusion? What consequences will come as a result of this choice? Would this choice help you to achieve the goals you have set for yourself? Can you be at peace with those consequences? She asserts that this is her life and therefore her choice. I replied Absolutely. But do you understand that when you are the one making the choice, you also own the consequence? That’s the double-edged sword of being an adult and making grown up choices. It’s like The Oklahoma Warranty – If it breaks into 2 parts, you own them both. She told me that she thought that I made some good points, but there are always extenuating circumstances. I know her well enough to know that in her mind she has already begun concocting a plan to lay the blame elsewhere: her parents, other students, the instructors, the courses, the text books… She has never been one to accept blame for anything – it is always Someone Else’s fault. I headed her off at the pass. I told her If you choose to quit college, I respect your choice. She thanked me for my support. She thanked me for respecting her. Then I told her I also expect that you will accept full responsibility if it turns out that you’ll be flipping burgers at Wendy’s rather than writing the next great novel or screenplay. She starts her next semester at the end of the month. However, I fully expect to repeat this conversation next semester. She’s stubborn, this one.

Manville School
SisterDear3 just got a marvelous phone call! Manville School in Boston, MA would be “delighted” to accept her son Thomas into their program. Manville School is affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital and other local colleges and universities. They offer a 1 on 1 program and it is a year-round program, which is really crucial for Thomas.
Thomas is an 8 year old boy who is Autistic (PDD-NOS). He also suffers from severe allergies as well as some other issues. It has been particularly difficult to find a permanent placement that was a good fit for Thomas. In fact, his current school placement has reluctantly kept him only because the SPED director had a ‘Stay-Put’ order put in place.
This is such great news! Yeah, Thomas!

God doesn’t live under the bed
I got an email forward that got me thinking about my brother. He is one of the kindest, sweetest people I know. Watch our home movies and you will always see one kid with the brightest, widest smile you’ll ever hope to see. That kid will be my sweet brother! He always has the most innocent, serene expression. That is exactly the image my mind always conjures up when I think of him.
He was diagnosed with a chemical imbalance when he was about 20 years old. I have never been clear on his actual diagnosis, so for now I’ll leave it at that. However, without his meds, his behavior has had at least one schizophrenic symptom: he has in the past occasionally heard voices that will encourage him to do things, such as move a picture from the wall into the attic.
He is incapable of telling a lie. Seriously, he’s incapable. To prove my assertion I once asked him to say his name was John. He smiled and said “But my name is ..”. I know dear, but just for fun, say it’s John, just this once. “But it’s not, it’s ..”.
This one observation, recognizing this one ‘flaw in his character’, I believe is key to understanding him as a person. He is so honest because it is inconceivable to him that there is ever a reason to lie, or that anybody might ever lie to him. It is also why he so often gets deeply hurt and let down by all the many ‘normal’ people that cross his path during any given day. He is naive. He is gullible. He will believe anything and everything you tell him. Why shouldn’t he? People wouldn’t lie.
My brother is a Christian, a husband and a father. He is happy, loving, courteous, thoughtful, helpful, frugal, responsible, dependable and hardworking. He is our Dad’s best friend. He lives to be the best Dad in the universe for his daughter.
God doesn’t live under the bed. He lives in my dear brother’s heart.

Oh my gosh, what a beautiful tribute to your brother. My younger brother (there were only 2 of us) died when he was 22. That was nearly 20 years ago and I still miss him. What a blessing that you have yours!

God doesn’t live under the bed

- I love big Red Wines

- I have 3 sisters and 4 brothers
- My parents are still happily married to each other
- I can’t whistle very well
- I want to go to Italy someday and spend a great deal of time sipping wine through Tuscany, hopefully with my sisters
- I used to have Pekingese dogs
- I almost had 2 Labradors, but a week after I brought them home my cats made me take them back
- I still drive a big car
- I love Oldies, especially Falsetto and Harmony
- I love Tenors
- Mr X took me to a Luciano Pavarotti concert 2 nights before our divorce was final. It was just marvelous, he could still hit the high C’s back then. Pavarotti could, not Mr X
- I was 11 when I attended my first Concert. It was The Monkees and I had a huge crush on Mike Nesmith… Huge.
- I am a procrastinator
- I am an optimist
- I am a Republican. I’ll never forget the moment when my dad realized that I was not a Democrat. I was raised in Camelot, the magical fairytale land of the Kennedy’s. My Dad still isn’t over it. (Although I will never again vote for any candidate who cannot properly pronounce the word Nuclear.)
- My hair is still mostly not gray
- My current favorite TV show is House
- I dearly loved my mother-in-law and my father-in-law
- I spent about 15 years in fertility treatment; it was expensive, heartbreaking and unsuccessful.
- My favorite TV channel is The Science Channel
- I really dislike watching the news on TV, especially local news
- I cannot stand commercials
- I believe that everybody who can vote, should
- My very favorite smell is a baby, right after a bath
- I love carnations
- My favorite colors are Red and Green
- I married my high school sweetheart
- My 3 sisters are my best friends
- I loved the Dick Van Dyke show, the Andy Griffith Show, The Waltons and pretty much all those hokey, family, feel good shows
- I send coffee back in a restaurant if it is not good
- I check my french fries at the drive through before I leave and send those back as well, usually with a remark similar to, “no, I want the ones I see on your TV ads and menu pictures”
- The last time I went to a movie theater was so long ago I don’t remember what I saw
- I have hundreds and hundreds of books, CD’s, videos and DVD’s
- I have a green hammock
- I’ve never attended a high school reunion
- I made my own Prom dress
- My favorite car that I’ve ever owned was a Blue 1965 convertible Mustang
- I wish I’d gone to college instead of getting married

- When I first got married I was so Obsessive-Compulsive that I would actually fluff the pillows on the couch while my guests were sitting on it. I gave that up, it was exhausting. Oddly, I have no problem with dust.
- I still can’t leave my house if a bed isn’t made
- I still can’t stand a dirty dish in the sink
- I refold my laundry after someone who has helped me fold it leaves
- I can’t fall asleep if the TV isn’t on
- I believe that we should have a universal heath plan for all US citizens, not just Medicare for retired people
- I believe that medicine can go too far

- I am somewhat claustrophobic. I need to know that I can open a window.
- I have always hated high bridges
- I have Panic Disorder. The first time I saw someone hyperventilating, I remember thinking “how can someone forget how to breathe”
- I am a non-smoker stuck in the body of a person who smokes
- I have a love/hate relationship with flying; I hate it, but I love that it can transport me so quickly to someone that I wish to spend time with
- I have been to Colorado twice, despite my fear of bridges and ledges
- I have been to Key West and watched the sunset at Mallory Square, despite the 44 bridges I had to cross to get there
- I value my privacy and solitude
- I love large gatherings
- I have never had a proper massage
- I have been on a cruise to the Caribbean
- I adore old family pictures
- I miss my grandmothers
- I still remember how the town I grew up in smelled the first day we moved in
- I love black licorice & Fire Balls
- I can’t cook without garlic

Reading your ‘Bucket List’ list of 100 Things I found many commonalities … and I hope you’re able to follow through on everything.
I married my high school sweet heart (though we both graduated from college first) and we were divorced after 21 years too when he left me. My parents died a long time ago and I miss them (and my brother) even now. I have just one surviving sister, but we’re close even though she’s traveling with her husband in an RV.
I’m a procrastinator and an optimist too … but my hair is mostly gray at least in the front where I see it frame my face … and I almost NEVER wear shoes now that I’m retired.
Seems to me that praying for your pilot is an excellent idea … the sooner the better. I concur fully with the last three items on your list … have blue eyes … value my privacy and solitude and live with fur-friends (a feral cat and a 3 year old lab). A Chef in the Kitchen
I am blessed to have three amazing sisters! One of my sisters found out she was pregnant with identical twins at the age of 41 – ‘Surprise’ just does not begin to cover it! She now has 8 year old twin boys. One of the twins is Autistic. His diagnosis is Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). My sister also has a 16 year old son and a 20 year old daughter. My niece was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder when she was 14. Yes, my sister has a very full life! She sails through each day with joy, grace, faith and humor.
Before she & her husband started a family she had put herself through college, opened a successful music business and had even given some serious consideration to becoming a writer of children’s books. She sure has some material to work with, let me tell you!
The 4 sisters started a blog a few months ago, mostly to keep up with each others daily lives as a group rather than sending separate emails. It’s mostly just the boring daily grind of life, but sometimes SisterDear3’s posts leave me in stitches. Her sense of humor is marvelous.
I want to share with you a post from our sister blog that she wrote a few days ago that just tickles me to no end, not because it exemplifies Thomas’ Autism, but rather because it’s a window into the mind of a delightful 8 year old little boy. It also gives you an idea of how amazing my sister is.
Good morning all! I woke up at 11:00 last night to the sound of cooking in the kitchen! Chef Thomas apparently woke up and decided to make a pie. He had taken a pie crust out of the cabinet and a brand new jar of Folgers Coffee, full box of salt, and water and was in pie heaven. Jim woke up this am for work and wanted to know why there was no coffee. Poor hubby! No coffee before work! Plenty of pie though!!!! All of you Dears have a wonderful day, I am off to Market Basket! Love #3
By the way, her wonderful husband is a hard-working cop who works many double shifts. When my sister went to the kitchen after he left for work she found his cup in the sink. She also found a used Blueberry tea bag. Poor Jim!

Bipolar Express
Christmas 2007 at SisterDear3’s house was delivered by the Bipolar Express. You can hear it coming from off in the distance, chugging it’s way towards the station. You also know it’s bringing with it chaos, much unpleasantness and lots of drama. It will arrive soon, and it will be loud.
SisterDear3’s 20 year old daughter was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder when she was about 14. She has yet to accept the diagnosis and insists that she will find a medical professional to “vindicate” her. *sigh*
She arrived home from her first semester at College to spend Christmas. She brought with her the latest chapter of Mania into my SisterDear3’s Merry Christmas home. SD3’s 8 year old twins had been asking “is tomorrow Christmas?” for a month and the stage was set for a joyous day. Soon after Bipolar daughter arrived, the twins were scared and hiding. She picked fights with her 16 year old brother. She threw Christmas gifts to floor with the most ungrateful and hateful remarks. It lasted 3 days before she stormed from the house ranting and screeching, vowing never to return or to speak to any of them again.
This time was different though; she struck her mother before she left the house.
She’s had 2 meltdowns which resulted in stays in psych wards. As a family, we’ve always tried to encourage her to seek medical assistance. Now, we are all insisting. She is loved, but she is no longer welcome. At least not until she ‘gets’ that her behavior, perceptions and paranoia is far from normal. She’s adamantly opposed to meds. She insists that when she takes them she can’t think clearly or function properly. We all know that she needs the help of a mental heath professional, but she still thinks we’re wrong.
And so the Bipolar Express has left the station again. We know it’s coming back, we just don’t know its’ schedule.

I hate hearing stories like that. It didn’t even occur to me that I might be bipolar, and no one had suggested a mental illness to me, and I didn’t get diagnosed until I was 26 and had a huge meltdown wherein I checked myself into the hospital. It is a shame that your niece won’t even consider the possibility, because for me at least, finding the right combo of meds has made an enormous difference in my life, much for the better, and though I hate the fact that I have BD, I am so happy that I did get diagnosed and am being treated.

T minus 3 minutes
My SisterDear2 is coming this morning and her flight was scheduled to take off 3 minutes ago! We’re so excited!!
This is actually our Christmas Day because we’ve waited for her arrival to exchange gifts. That little detail caused SisterDear4 to ’spill the beans’ on one of our Dad’s Christmas gifts last night. She called to see how our day went and asked him if he liked the slippers she sent him. LOL. Being the sweetie he is, he said he hadn’t opened them yet, but he was sure he’d love them.
Dad update: he just came in to the office and brought me my first cup of coffee. I love my Dad!

A Rescue Dog’s Christmas Poem
Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full – we are lost, but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,They’ll come to adopt us and give us the call,
“Come here, Max and Sparkie – come fetch your new ball!!
But now we sit here and think of the days…
we were treated so fondly – we had cute, baby ways,Once we were little, then we grew and we grew
now we’re no longer young and we’re no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
they reacted so quickly – why were they so rash?We “jump on the children:, “don’t come when they call”,
we “bark when they leave us”, climb over the wall.
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made.If only they’d trained us, if only we knew…
we’d have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.
We were left in the backyard, or worse -let to roam-
now we’re tired and lonely and out of a home.They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye…

One more trip around the Sun and other Random thoughts
Today is SisterDear3’s Half Centennial Birthday. I use to feel a bit like James T. Kirk, boldly going where no one had gone before…. It’s very strange to be the oldest of 8 kids and to see them all getting older, because of course, I am still 24. hehehe. Even my baby brother in 37 and my oldest nephew is 28. Good Lord. Where does the time go?
Last night MotherDear had the girls from Bingo & A & B over for supper and poker. For a change, I won a few hands. I don’t know how that happened. Perhaps Santa bestowed some pre-Christmas magic poker dust on me for the evening.
MotherDear actually played some piano! Then while A & B took the girls down the street to see their house, Dad played a little too. I love it when they play. It brings me back to my childhood. I know, corny. But also very true. Someone playing the piano was like a magic beckoning call… a few notes on the keyboard and everyone in the house just gathered at the piano. Many happy memories are triggered whenever I hear a piano. I’m so glad one of my nephews and my brother-in law also play. Bonus points to my nephew, the teacher. He actually gets to teach kids music every day in school and also teaches private piano and guitar lessons. How cool is that?
SisterDear2 has the best present for our parents this year, and I can’t wait! She’s flying down the day after Christmas and we’re all sooo excited about her visit. But I really am looking forward to them opening her very special gift. My Dad had mentioned last spring that he was hoping to watch the old home movies while up for our July visit last summer. So I had special-ordered the bulb needed for this old projector. As soon as they turned the projector on, the bulb blew. Much disappointment filled the room. So, that’s what gave SisterDear2 the idea for the Christmas gift. She took all of the 8mm videos from our childhood and had them put on DVDs!! I know!!! There will be many teary eyes while watching them! My brother-in-law also made copies for everybody. What an awesome gift!!!
As I lay in bed last night I was reflecting upon my life, especially the past year and a half. Last year I sold my business of 20 years and moved to another state. I invited my parents to live with me and my kitties. It was kind of a big deal, such a major move. Overall, I have to say that I’m quite content with my life. There is really just one thing I plan to work on in 2008, and that is to push my new business into a higher sales volume without spending as much money advertising as last year. God willing, I will make enough to meet my needs, and a little bit extra for some of my wants. I’ve totally forgotten what it was like to have disposable income!

Grampy Hide & Seek
Last night Mom took Nana to their Purrsday Night Bingo. Because it was dark outside we couldn’t go out to hunt anything, so we decided to play our little Hide & Seek game with Grampy. We play this every once in a while, mostly just to see how long Grampy will keep playing.
About as soon as it starts getting dark, Grampy calls us in for supper. After he fed us, we hid in one of our many secret hiding places. It didn’t take long for him to wonder where we were. Sometimes, he’s sure we’re in, and sometimes he’s not so sure. 
Last night was one of those nights when he wasn’t so sure.
Purrfect, let the game begin!
First he calls us. Usually, we come right away, but of course, we didn’t last night. Then we just sit and watch. He walks into the TV room, into the living room, down the hall into all the bedrooms, all the while opening closet doors. Then he goes back down the hall, through the kitchen and into the laundry room.
He calls us again.
Then out to the garage and into the utility room. Back to the living room and back into the kitchen again.
Once again, he calls us. hehehe.
Then he goes outside for about 10 minutes, walking all around the house, checking the patio chairs, lawn chairs and behind all the bushes.
It starts to rain! Sweet.
He uncovers the mower and checks on the seat where we occassionaly take a nap. Back into the house and into the living room. Back out to the garage, where this time he opens the freezer. The freezer? Back into the kitchen he goes, scratching his head.
He’s about to give up.
He heads into the TV room and watches TV for a few minutes. Then he comes back into the kitchen and calls us again. This time we come right away and sit in front of him. Then we Me-ow once or twice, walk in and out of his legs purring. Then, the trump card – we sit straight up on our hind legs and Me-ow. Then, we wait for it.
He walks into the pantry and opens us another lovely can of food. Our favorite – seafood that looks like worms. Works every time.

Old Friends and Cups
I got an email from some very dear friends this morning. What a lovely way to start my day, simply to know that someone has me in their prayers, every day.
I also got this from another friend which reminded me to keep my eye on what’s really important as we go about our busy lives. Let me share it with you:
Cups
A group of alumni, all highly established in their respective careers, got together for a visit with their old university professor. The conversation soon turned to complaints about the endless stress of work and life in general.
Offering his guests coffee, the professor went into the kitchen and soon returned with a large pot of coffee and an eclectic assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal – some plain, some expensive, some quite exquisite. Quietly he told them to help themselves to some fresh coffee.
When each of his former students had a cup of coffee in hand, the old professor quietly cleared his throat and began to patiently address the small gathering… ”You may have noticed that all of the nicer looking cups were taken up first, leaving behind the plainer and cheaper ones. While it is only natural for you to want only the best for yourselves that is actually the source of much of your stress-related problems.”
He continued…”Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In fact, the cup merely disguises or dresses up what we drink. What each of you really wanted was coffee, not a cup, but you instinctively went for the best cups… Then you began eyeing each other’s cups.”
“Now consider this: Life is coffee. Jobs, money, and position in society are merely cups. They are just tools to shape and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not truly define nor change the quality of the Life we live. - I have completed Phase I of the major overhaul to my business web site. Whew! I shall reward myself with an entire 24 hours abstinence from any web site-related work… before I begin Phase II.
- My mother called this morning to tell me not to stop for wine on my way home from the office as she has already done so. I love my mother.
- A nice check arrived in today’s mail. I love when that happens, don’t you?
Now if I could just get someone to run my other errands.

Chaos Theory
Well, another week ends. Another list of ‘did not do’, and another list of ‘did, but wasn’t expecting to do’. As I have so often said,
It is good to have a plan, just be prepared to modify it
This weekend I did not accomplish a single of my major goals. A few minor changes which I made to my business web site changed the course of the weekend entirely. What should have taken 15 minutes has, so far, taken 20 hours and I’m not done ‘undoing’. Good grief.
The upside is that my error has revealed a new avenue of income. I’m never ashamed to admit an error because there is always a lesson to be learned. One could argue that mistakes are the greatest teachers. A lesson learned the hard way is nonetheless learned.
So, at the end of the day I am weary, but wiser. A nice glass of Chianti is in order! Then I’m off to sleep. It was a good week.

What happened to that nice cold front that we had all week when I couldn’t decorate because I had to work? It was 32 at night and only in the 50’s-60’s during the day. I was so looking forward to a nice cozy fire, Christmas music and wine. Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown.
My niece is on the warpath again; another manic phase coinciding with the end of the semester and the Christmas holidays. Now you know this can not be good. *sigh* And yet her mother, my sister the saint, is still in a festive, happy mood. I truly cannot imagine how she does it. God must have given her a double dose of patience and understanding. A mother’s love would not suffice.
My cats sat under the tree ALL day today while the squirrels collected pecans for the winter. They lay there just waiting. Never moving for hour after hour. Alas; not a single squirrel fell into their clever trap.
Well, tomorrow is another day.

I Know Who She Is
As a follow up to yesterday’s post (The Perfect Man) I want to share a story I read on USURP – This exemplifies my definition of The Perfect Man
I Know Who She Is
It was a busy morning, approximately 8:30 am, when an elderly gentleman, in his 80’s, arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He stated that he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.
I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.
On exam it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.
While taking care of his wound, we began to engage in conversation. I asked him if he had a doctor’s appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.
I then inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer Disease. As we talked, and I finished dressing his wound, I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.
I was surprised, and asked him. “And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?”
He smiled as he patted my hand and said. “She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.”
I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, “That is the kind of love I want in my life.” True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

The Perfect Man – Hello?
There I was, blogging this morning over coffee, and came across a blog where a woman was married to her soul mate, the love of her life.
OK… so the divorced, slightly jaded, moderately cynical woman is thinking “Is there a such a thing as the ‘perfect man’? Is the phrase ‘perfect man’ THE classic oxymoron, right up there with ‘military intelligence’ and ‘government efficiency’?” For the last few hours, I’ve been asking myself what would it take? What sort of man could make me actually consider remarrying?
Here goes.
In a heartbeat, I would marry again, if the right man presented himself. I liked being married (see Mr X). I enjoyed having someone to share things with; the good and the bad. At this point in my life I am more discerning because I know myself better. I will keep this list open as I think more about it, but for now to marry again I would need a man who is:
- Intelligent -not necessarily someone with 5 or 6 post-graduate degrees, but well read and well spoken.
- Extroverted – at least to some measurable degree. I enjoy conversation and gatherings.
- Funny – a sense of humor, able to laugh at yourself and sometimes, your circumstances.
- Family-oriented – my family is where my heart is.
- Content with a simple life – home, family, friends, food, sitting in front of a cozy fire sipping wine.
- Appreciative of some of the finer things – music, wine, books, perhaps some travel
- Wine lover – see #s 5 & 6
- Neat – I don’t do well in a cluttered environment.
- An animal lover – I will always have pets.
- Affectionate – I love a touch, a look, a hug.
- Gainfully Employed – lol, almost forgot that one.
- Thoughtful – brings flowers for no reason, makes me soup when I’m sick.
- Sentimental – remembers birthdays, first dates, etc.
- Kind – to young, old and everything in between
- Mechanically Inclined and Generally handy around the house – have you had to pay for a service call of any kind lately?
- A Boston Sports Fan – my family would have a difficult time accepting a NY Yankee fan – it would not be pretty
- Spontaneous – I’m not sure I need this, but since I’ve never had this, I’d like to take it out for a spin

Pastor’s Cat
Barbara Gregg tells us the Christmas story of the “pastor’s cat.”
“Seems just before Christmas, a pastor’s kitten had climbed up into a tree and was afraid to come down. He tried to coax it down with food and warm milk, but, no dice. The tree was too frail to climb, so the pastor decided to rope it and pull it down closer with his car, thinking the cat would jump off when it neared the ground. But, as he moved the car forward, the rope snapped, the tree went ‘boing,’ and the kitten sailed out of sight. The pastor felt terrible, but figured the Lord would care for it somehow.
“A few days later, he was in the supermarket, when he came upon one of his parishioners, who hated cats, with a basketful of cat food. Being curious, he asked her why she was buying cat food when she disliked cats so much. She said, ‘You won’t believe this, but my little girl had been begging me for a cat for Christmas, so I told her if God wants her to have a cat, I would let her keep it. I watched her go into our yard, kneel down, and pray for a kitty. No sooner had she finished, a kitten flew out of the sky and landed in front of her. I know, Pastor, because I was there when it happened.’
‘Amen,’ smiled the pastor knowingly, as he thanked God for the ‘Christmas gift.’”

Reminiscing
Last night I sat on the patio with my Dad reminiscing about Christmases past. I listened as he recalled days of sledding, skating, and Christmas Parades with Santa and his sleigh actually stopping in front of our house on Christmas Eve! One story leading to another and another.
Having my parents living with me during the autumn of their lives has been both an enlightening and wonderful experience for me. My parents are part of my memories as well as keepers of my memories. As we discuss different events of my childhood, differences in perceptions and recollections are almost always revealed. How could they not be different?
Listening to my parents recall events from the years they were raising their family, me and my seven siblings, has brought a whole new enrichment to my life.
For example, I remember the big 3-day blackout in the 60’s as being a great adventure for me and my sister as we waited for Dad to ‘rescue’ us in the eves of the 3rd floor in our house. To this day that house is still my favorite. The house itself was huge! It had a full basement, 2 floors and a finished attic. It had tons of cubby holes and hiding places. We even discovered a ’secret room’ in the attic which could only be accessed from the kitchen pantry. We wondered endlessly what purpose that room was intended for, and why it was hidden. The house also had 4 fireplaces, a library, a basement toilet that flushed up and a gigantic framed window overlooking the bay and the Boston skyline. For a time, we had three generations living in that house.
My Dad remembers that the house was painted all one dark dreary grey color so that it looked like a haunted house and that he dreaded the thought of repainting it, and that he had serious issues with the furnaces and trouble keeping the house heated. He told me some of the history of the house, recalling old photographs of young girls in parasols on the front lawn at the turn of the century, that it was once a hotel affiliated with the yacht club.
What we agreed on is that the times we shared in that house were wonderful. It was simply marvelous!

Holiday Tips
No clue where this list originated so I can’t give credit, but it’s hysterical.
- Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.
- Drink as much eggnog as you can and quickly. You can’t find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an ‘eggnog-aholic’ or something. It’s a treat. Enjoy it! Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think.
- If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand-alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.
- As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.
- Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello?
- Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.
- If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you’re never going to see them again.
- Same for pies. Apple, pumpkin and mincemeat – have a slice of each. Or, if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert — Labor Day?
- Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards. I am a firm believer that there is only one fruitcake in the world and it just keeps going around and around by mail.
- One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Reread tips.
Start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner. Remember: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ‘YEE-HAWWWWWW! what a ride!”

T minus 3 minutes
My SisterDear2 is coming this morning and her flight was scheduled to take off 3 minutes ago! We’re so excited!!
This is actually our Christmas Day because we’ve waited for her arrival to exchange gifts. That little detail caused SisterDear4 to ’spill the beans’ on one of our Dad’s Christmas gifts last night. She called to see how our day went and asked him if he liked the slippers she sent him. LOL. Being the sweetie he is, he said he hadn’t opened them yet, but he was sure he’d love them.
Dad update: he just came in to the office and brought me my first cup of coffee. I love my Dad!

Lasso the Christmas Eve Moon
It’s Christmas Eve morning and tonight there should be a pretty phenomenal sky. See the Link below.
I just told my Dad about this. It was like I had just given him a Christmas present. He loves stuff like this. He’s added sky watching to his Christmas Eve plans. He’s digging out his binoculars. I’m sure my MotherDear and I will also join him. Another Christmas Memory in the making.
Today will be full of last minute errands and crossing off the last of the items on the ‘to do’ list.
