Look what my Dad grew for me this year!
See that nasty looking bug?

They’re planted along the back corner fence. They’re about 6-7 feet tall now.

These are some seriously cool flowers!

This is the first bloom! Isn’t she a beauty?

Weary, we are

The Bipolar Express just ran through town again. You know how it feels when you’re standing on the train platform and an express train whooshes past the platform?

j0403633.jpgMy bipolar niece is like that. She sucks the air right out of the room. She sent an email during the night denouncing the Aunts as relatives, accusing us once more of being biased and uninformed self-proclaimed experts who know nothing about anything. She is angry and offended. Again.

She still refuses to consider going back on her meds, ever defiant.

Her mother, me and the other SisterDears are weary of the fight. So we catch our breath and gather strength from one another while we wait, for the next time.

God doesn’t live under the bed

I got an email forward that got me thinking about my brother. He is one of the kindest, sweetest people I know. Watch our home movies and you will always see one kid with the brightest, widest smile you’ll ever hope to see. That kid will be my sweet brother! He always has the most innocent, serene expression. That is exactly the image my mind always conjures up when I think of him.

He was diagnosed with a chemical imbalance when he was about 20 years old. I have never been clear on his actual diagnosis, so for now I’ll leave it at that. However, without his meds, his behavior has had at least one schizophrenic symptom: he has in the past occasionally heard voices that will encourage him to do things, such as move a picture from the wall into the attic.

He is incapable of telling a lie. Seriously, he’s incapable. To prove my assertion I once asked him to say his name was John. He smiled and said “But my name is ..”. I know dear, but just for fun, say it’s John, just this once. “But it’s not, it’s ..”.

This one observation, recognizing this one ‘flaw in his character’, I believe is key to understanding him as a person. He is so honest because it is inconceivable to him that there is ever a reason to lie, or that anybody might ever lie to him. It is also why he so often gets deeply hurt and let down by all the many ‘normal’ people that cross his path during any given day. He is naive. He is gullible. He will believe anything and everything you tell him. Why shouldn’t he? People wouldn’t lie.

My brother is a Christian, a husband and a father. He is happy, loving, courteous, thoughtful, helpful, frugal, responsible, dependable and hardworking. He is our Dad’s best friend. He lives to be the best Dad in the universe for his daughter.

God doesn’t live under the bed. He lives in my dear brother’s heart.

My Bucket List

I have been inspired once more by Sydney. And so I begin My Bucket List. These are no particular order, simply as they spring to mind. I will keep this list in my anchored pages so that I can update it. I haven’t seen this movie yet, and am very much looking forward to it :-)

Before I “Kick The Bucket” I want to:

  1. Marry the love of my life and live happily ever after. I imagine feeling completely content and utterly safe with him, listening to music, sampling wines, reading, watching sappy old movies all while snuggling up in front of a cozy fire.
  2. Dance to All I Ask of You at my wedding.
  3. Spend a month in Tuscany in a lovely Villa with a fireplace and a pool. I want it to be overlooking a vineyard on one side, and Cypress trees, Poppy fields and Olive trees on the other. I want to spend my days exploring ancient Rome and local marketplaces while sipping wine and sampling all the fabulous food only the local Italians can offer.
  4. Pay off my mortgage and finally and forever be completely debt-free. While I have never imagined myself being wealthy, and have no non-secured debt, this is my idea of true wealth.
  5. Learn to relax, as thoroughly and luxuriously as my cats do every day of their nine lives.
  6. Learn to play the piano.
  7. Own a second home in New England so as often as I wished I could spend as much time with my sisters as I would like.
  8. See the Pyramids.
  9. See the triumphant return of Jesus. I can’t explain it, but since I was a little girl, I have always felt that I would be alive when that happens. I felt this way long before I knew what being saved was. I am an avid reader of biblical prophesy. Unfortunately, my brain is too small to hold the enormity of it and my memory is such that I retain very little of it. Of course, I know I am in good company! I read the Left Behind series in great anticipation of reading another person’s concept of what that magnificent event will be like.
  10. Know that everybody I love is saved and will spend all eternity free of pain and tears.
  11. Spend a Christmas at a ski lodge in Vermont, not unlike the firepit scene with Bob Wallace & Betty Haynes from White Christmas. I am originally from New England and have never been to Vermont! I have always imagined it to be at it’s most splendid during Christmas.
  12. Attend a Placido Domingo concert while he is still in glorious voice.
  13. Attend a Andrea Bocelli concert, in Italy.
  14. Reach my ideal body weight and be in excellent health.
  15. Watch the sunset on an uncrowded beach in St. Maarten with my only love.
  16. See The Phantom of the Opera in London, enjoy a pint at the pub, visit Stonehenge and walk across the crosswalk on Abbey Road.
  17. Spend at least a week in Greece.
  18. Encourage my parents to check off as many items from their Bucket List while they both enjoy strong body, mind and spirit.

Stormy Weather

Filed under Thought for the Day

I don’t know how many of you actually remember Black & White TV and great old movies like this, but I saw this on A Gentleman’s Domain and it is four minutes and 41 seconds of pure brilliance!

Cab Calloway’s skat intros the The Nicholas Brothers‘ amazing tap performance in a phenomenal scene from the movie Stormy Weather. Fred Astaire once called this performance “the greatest dance number ever filmed.”

It’s not widely known, but when I was much, much younger I took 8 years of dance. I could totally still do this, but I’d require a stage with twin staircases, an orchestra, a great partner, and various other props.

Hi-De-Ho!

The Bipolar Express seems to be on schedule

The Bipolar Express seems to be on schedule.

Bipolar Niece (BPN) just returned to college for the next semester. I was talking with her mother, SisterDear3 last night. She mentioned that her daughter has already started calling her about 5-7 times a day. BPN seems to be stuck on playing the ‘Mother Bashing’ game, even if only by telephone.

So I’m doing the math in my head and I’m wondering…  BPN’s last manic episode was over Christmas. She mentioned to her mother that her period was later than normal this month. So was the manic phase. It may just be anecdotal, but BPN’s mood swings definitely seem to coincide with her menstrual cycles. Either that, or BPN has the tremendous misfortune of suffering a manic phase at the same time as having the worst case of PMS in the universe.

So I have a question to any of you who are Bipolar and female; have any of you noticed any correlation with your mood swings and menstrual cycles? I sincerely would like your input.

Thomas gets his first Award

img_0003_web.JPGSome of you may recall that my nephew Thomas, twin to Kevin and son to SisterDear3, was accepted into Manville School school in January. Thomas’ diagnosis is PDD/NOS. It had been quite difficult to find a program that was not only a good fit for Thomas but one that also had an opening. His previous placement only reluctantly kept him in due to a “Stay Put” order by the SPED Director.

We were all very excited and relieved when Thomas started at Manville.

Well, when SisterDear3 emptied his backpack last week she found that Thomas had received his very first Award from Manville! What was amazing though was that Thomas did not tear it to bits before arriving home, despite the fact that weather and traffic made his ride home about 2 hours longer than it should be on a normal day and Thomas loves to tear paper almost better than I enjoy a nice glass of wine!

I would be delighted to put the Award up for you all to admire, but unfortunately SisterDear3 is Scanner-Challenged. ;-)

Way to go Thomas!!

wut fish?

Guest Contributor: SisterDear3

On another note, Fisherman Thomas, yes, that is the career of the week, decided that he wanted to put his goldfish ”Dorothy”, in her very own bowl. He also decided that all of Kevin’s fish should live together as a “Family”.

So, somewhere around 3 am, he found another bowl, reached in and fished out poor Dorothy, who safely made it into her very own home. He then took the other two fish from his bowl and attempted to create a fish family for Kevin. I woke up at this point and put him back to bed.

In the morning, Kevin’s large white goldfish “Fred”, was not in the bowl. I asked Thomas where he was, he said, “Is he in the toilet?”

Poor Fred.

Later that day, while I was lying on the couch, Keven bent over and said, “What’s this?” Yes, it was indeed poor Fred. We then gave him a proper goldfish sendoff to fish heaven.

Oh well, I wonder what next weeks career will be?

Manville School

SisterDear3 just got a marvelous phone call! Manville School in Boston, MA would be “delighted” to accept her son Thomas into their program. Manville School is affiliated with Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital and other local colleges and universities. They offer a 1 on 1 program and it is a year-round program, which is really crucial for Thomas.

Thomas is an 8 year old boy who is Autistic (PDD-NOS). He also suffers from severe allergies as well as some other issues. It has been particularly difficult to find a permanent placement that was a good fit for Thomas. In fact, his current school placement has reluctantly kept him only because the SPED director had a ‘Stay-Put’ order put in place.

This is such great news! Yeah, Thomas!

PhotoHunt: Unique/Funny Signs

Filed under Thought for the Day

When Allen first bought the house at The Swamp, we were commuting every other weekend or so from Florida until we could sell our business and move to Georgia permanently. On top of having the natural, unspoiled beauty of The Swamp and all its’ wildlife, we also have best neighbors! Mike, one of our new neighbors, had this little presentation waiting for us in the kitchen when we arrived for a long weekend in April 2006.

Coffee all ready to go, with a Welcome Back sign from Mike

When we first met Mike, we had no idea how much his friendship would enrich us. Mike is career Air Force, about 26 years now. Mike is the most patriotic person I have ever known. Mike is also a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was critically injured in Baghdad, Iraq about 4 years ago. His injuries were quite extensive, including Traumatic Brain Injury. He also suffers from Post- Traumatic Shock Disorder.

What defines Mike, however, is his love of God, Country, Family, Friends and Animals. He would literally give you the shirt off his back. Mike loves helping people, sometimes people he doesn’t even know well. I won’t share these things here, because Mike prefers to be an anonymous benefactor. He believes in giving people a hand up, and does so quite often. He’s an amazing human being. I am very grateful to call him my friend!
When I saw this Welcome Back from Mike, I cried. Then I took this photograph. Then I took the note and tucked it away with my treasures. It serves to remind me that a simple act of kindness can make a tremendous impact in someone else’s life.
Thank you, Mike. I love you, my friend.
