Barb's life, in photographs

learning is fun-damental!

Grayson

Some of you know that I bought Photoshop Elements for myself around Christmas. I really haven’t had the time or patience to learn it, but last week I decided to give it more of my undivided attention as the summer is usually slow for my industry. I’ve been doing some online tutorials through Photoshop’s web site, some Youtube videos and checking out some tips of my photography blogging buddies and Facebook friends. So far, the only effect I’ve learned is the Orton Effect, because it’s my current favorite!

Well, yesterday Eyad posted a photo that blew me away with his use of selected color. I adore black and white! I have posted a few photos of my cats in black and white and “cheated” by coloring their eyes, which is kind of easy with dark gray cats. However, I wanted to learn how to do it using Photoshops layers because the result is so much better!

Here is the photo of Grayson I used as my Christmas card last year. I used layers to paint back his own eye color. I know this isn’t huge, but I was so pleased, I decided to learn how to use the Clone Tool to get rid of the flood lights that were very distracting in the upper left of this photo.

I think I did OK for a first try. The important thing to me is that I can’t wait to try something else now! Perhaps Contrast Masking…

Happy Monday, y’all!

  2. Hi Barb,
I have photoshop elements too, but haven’t unwrapped it yet. You have inspired me to start it up and play around, but it will have to wait til my holidays start in two weeks time.

  5. My graphic designer friends say that photoshop takes a while to get “down pat”
Hang in there. I’m proud of you for teaching yourself. There’s nothing you can’t do!

  7. You are smart! My Mommie gave up trying to read the manual and just played around with it and also some on-line tutorials. It’s all about the layers! And the clone tool is a big help, too!

  8. Hi Barb,

Well the finshed result is lovely – I’m impressed. I’d love to learn photo shop – I’ll have to save up and treat myself! It’s good that you have enjoyed yourself and are keen to learn more.

  10. That’s a gorgeous photo! I really like Photoshop Elements, but I’ve resisted learning layers :) (I know, this is silly!) The on-line tutorials sound like a wonderful idea.
